Staff Reviews

A founding member of the Detection Club and the first woman to serve as its president (1949-1957), Sayers, as a proponent of women in industry, would likely be chuffed that her 11-book series—easily read as stand-alones (except for Busman’s Honeymoon)—is still being published. Her protagonist is nothing like her. Lord Peter Wimsey is an eccentric noble who is, seemingly, as capricious as his name suggests. His hobbies? Collecting incunabula, cricket, driving fast cars, sleuthing, and financially backing a women’s employment agency (of covert investigators).

I would recommend starting with Whose Body? or Strong Poison (which introduces the Beatrice to Peter’s Benedick).

Description

The classic mystery that first featured Harriet Vane, companion sleuth to the dashing, perennially popular private investigator, Lord Peter Wimsey, from the mystery writer widely considered the greatest mystery novelist of the Golden Age--Dorothy L. Sayers.

Featuring an introduction by Elizabeth George, herself a crime fiction master, Strong Poison introduces Harriet Vane, a mystery writer who is accused of poisoning her fiancé and must now join forces with Lord Peter to escape a murder conviction and the hangman’s noose.
